How to choose the move level in ChessNavio
How the hint levels differ and which one to pick for learning, a relaxed game against the computer, or the strictest analysis.
Automatic or manual level
In automatic mode ChessNavio looks at your opponent’s rating where it is available and picks an approximate level a little above it. Manually you can set any value between 800 and 2600. Treat it as a useful reference point, not a promise of an exact rating match on every site.
The amateur level
Good for getting to know the assistant and for simple training games. Understandable moves come first: developing pieces, king safety, direct threats and obvious exchanges. Difficult tactical exceptions are still taken into account when ignoring them would make the position clearly worse.
The club level
A good starting point for most players who play regularly. The recommendations stay practically strong without demanding that you always find the single computer line. If you do not know what to choose, start here and ask yourself after a few games whether the ideas make sense to you.
The strong and expert levels
These modes choose precise continuations more often and allow more complex plans. They help with serious reviews, with preparing a position, and with games against a strong computer. One recommendation still does not replace understanding: open the idea and compare at least two reasonable replies.
The maximum level
Use it when you want the strictest local analysis your time and your computer allow. It may suggest difficult quiet moves whose point only becomes visible a few half-moves later. For everyday learning, a permanent maximum is not always more useful than a level you can follow.
How to tell the level fits
After a few positions ask yourself two questions: can you explain the recommended move in your own words, and do you find similar ideas on your own? If the advice looks random or too hard, lower the level. If every decision is obvious and you want a stricter check, raise it one step.
